Programme Overview:

The Level 5 Operations Manager apprenticeship prepares learners to take responsibility for managing teams, projects and departmental performance across a wide range of organisations. Aligned to the Operations Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship Standard, this programme develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for effective leadership, operational delivery and strategic impact.

Operations or Departmental Managers are responsible for delivering organisational strategy, managing budgets, leading teams and ensuring performance targets are achieved. They operate across sectors including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, professional services, logistics and the public sector.

Access to Advanced Training Opportunities

Apprentices build a comprehensive portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence across all areas of the apprenticeship standard.

  • The standard on-programme duration is 18 months, followed by a 5-month End-Point Assessment (EPA) period.

    A fast-track route of 8 months (plus 5 months EPA) may be available, subject to prior learning, experience and employer agreement in line with apprenticeship funding rules.

  • An Operations Manager is responsible for leading teams, managing resources and delivering organisational performance within their area of responsibility.

  • Yes. Levy and non-levy employer funding is available.

    Employers can use apprenticeship funding to cover the cost of training and assessment, subject to eligibility and apprenticeship funding rules

  • The programme is workplace-based with remote learning support, allowing apprentices to develop skills in real-time within their job role.

    Delivery includes:

    • Workplace-based learning
    • Structured off-the-job training
    • Tutor-led workshops
    • Professional discussions and reflective practice
    • Portfolio development support

    Apprentices must complete required off-the-job training hours in line with apprenticeship funding requirements.

    Employers must provide protected time during working hours for training.

  • Before entering End-Point Assessment, apprentices must:

    • Achieve Level 2 English and Maths (if required)
    • Complete their on-programme portfolio
    • Complete a minimum of 418 off-the-job training hours
    • Complete a work-based project proposal
    • Be confirmed as occupationally competent by their employer

  • The End-Point Assessment is conducted by an independent End-Point Assessment Organisation.

    It typically includes:

    • Presentation of a work-based project (with questioning)
    • Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

    Apprentices must successfully pass the EPA to achieve the full apprenticeship standard.

  • To enrol, apprentices must:

    • Be employed in a supervisory, team leader or management role
    • Have responsibility for managing people, projects or budgets
    • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development and professional standards

    Employers must provide opportunities for apprentices to demonstrate leadership, operational and strategic responsibilities required by the standard.

  • On successful completion, apprentices may progress to:

    • Level 5 People Professional
    • Level 6 Chartered Manager

    Professional Membership – Friend Membership with the Chartered Management Institute

    Apprentices are supported to access Friend membership with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

    This helps apprentices to:

    • Demonstrate commitment to professional management standards
    • Begin building their leadership profile within their sector
    • Access management insights, research and professional resources
    • Stay informed about current leadership and organisational best practice
    • Support progression towards higher levels of professional recognition

  • Apprentices also complete an independently CPD-accredited Health and Safety course, supporting safe and compliant management practice.
